"Game of Thrones" is about to start season 4 on HBO, but author George R. R. Martin is already thinking ahead to the end.
The lifespan of the series has always been a question, since "A Song of Ice and Fire" will conclude with the seventh book (Martin is still writing the sixth book, "The Winds of Winter"). Showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have previously said they envision the HBO series running seven or eight seasons, but now, Martin says that there is a possibility of finishing it on the big screen.
"It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10?" he told The Hollywood Reporter.
"The books get bigger and bigger (in scope). It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know."
HBO has experience transitioning their shows to film -- "Sex and the City" continued with two movies, and "Entourage" is getting the big-screen treatment next.
Of course, Martin has to finish his book series first!
