Classic FM show to feature music from Doctor Who, Sherlock, Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey

An edition of Howard Goodall's Saturday Night at the Movies will focus on TV theme tunes

The emotional departure of Amy Pond and the triumphant return of Sherlock Holmes are among the dramatic moments set to feature in a Classic FM programme dedicated to music from TV shows.

Howard Goodall's weekly radio programme Saturday Night at the Movies will switch its attention to the small screen later this month, to celebrate scores from well-loved series including Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, Red Dwarf and Broadchurch, as well as BBC1 cult favourites Doctor Who and Sherlock.

Classic Doctor Who will be represented by Geoffrey Burgon's incidental music for 1975 Tom Baker episode Terror of the Zygons, while scores from new Who will include composer Murray Gold's Rose's Theme, from 2005's The End of the World starring Billie Piper and Christopher Eccleston, and Together or Not at All, from The Angels Take Manhattan, which accompanied the moving departure of companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams, played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill.

The programme will also feature David Arnold and Michael Price’s composition SherlockLives!, which marked the return of Benedict Cumberbatch’s detective in Sherlock series three opening episode The Empty Hearse, following his death-defying leap from the roof of St Bart's hospital.

Meanwhile, composer and presenter Goodall will play his own scores for sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf and ecclesiastical sitcom The Vicar of Dibley in a programme divided into four sections.

The first part, focusing on period drama, will include music from Downton Abbey, Brideshead Revisited, Parade's End, The Hour, The Paradise, Foyle's War, The White Queen and A Poet in New York.

A sci-fi section will showcase the Doctor Who and Red Dwarf scores, while part three will play crime drama themes from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Inspector Morse, Lewis, Miss Marple, Luther, The Killing and Broadchurch, as well as Sherlock.

The two-hour programme will conclude with a celebration of scores from recent shows, including the Game of Thrones theme, and incidental music from series three and four of the acclaimed fantasy drama, as well as a nod to recent on-demand hits the equally bloodthirsty historical drama Vikings and the acclaimed remake of political thriller House of Cards.
